If approved by the Examination Board, the Master’s thesis may take the form of an academic paper published in the proceedings of a peer-reviewed scientific conference or a publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal.
Please note the following: In accordance with Section 23(1) of the Joint Examination Regulations, candidates who wish to make use of this option must submit an application by email to the Chair of the Examination Board.
- The thesis supervisor must be included in the cc field of your email and, where necessary, should also provide a ranking assessment of the scientific conference.
- The article or research output that has been accepted for publication must be declared as a Bachelor's or Master's thesis and must meet the usual formal criteria for academic theses (bound, deposit copies, primary and secondary thesis examiners, etc.).
- The foreword to the thesis should specify in as much detail as possible the precise form of the publication (regular journal paper / short letter to a journal / conference talk or poster).
- Please enclose the following documents with each deposit copy:
- the relevant referees' reports from the journal or conference
- if you are submitting a revised version of a manuscript, a description of any changes introduced relative to the original
- If the article has more than one author, the candidate must submit a letter signed by all authors that clearly sets out each author's individual contribution to the article.
- Additional information, such as the acceptance rate of a conference, if known.
Based on the information submitted and the content of the article, the two examiners will decide whether the candidate's own contribution fulfils the requirements expected of a Bachelor's or Master's thesis. It may be advisable to contact the examiners before submission.
